Unity
by Danny W. Setzer

Ephesians 4:13 ..till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

We do not need to look very far in order to stumble into ditches of disunity over belief, doctrine or church affiliation.  Although I am very optimistic, this may always be a patch of poison we have contracted that reoccurs from time to time that we have to scratch.  Some minds may never see beyond the pond in the backyard, while others with ease navigate the oceans.

Unity is a biblical concept and goal and not an optional plan B package. We may as someone has aptly said, disagree without being disagreeable. When given opportunity to enter into fellowship and relationship with individuals, groups, churches, and organizations that are foundationally Christ centered, we are not asked to abandon our church, congregation, or denomination in order to worship God.  What will be thrust upon us is a decision to fellowship or remain sectarian.  It will help to keep in mind that no matter which group we have chosen to stick with, all these groups located all over the world that do not talk like us, look like us, believe like us, but are born again believers, are going to arrive at the same destination, the only difference being that we decide to welcome them this side of heaven instead of waiting to greet them on the other shore.

The ground that all of us can easily meet and forge our unity upon is found at the cross where Christ died for us all.  No argument or faction can float very long with devote lovers of Jesus Christ, who decide to love despite the differences and partisan interest.  There is one great sacrifice we must make in order to have this unity, we will have to give up our small minds and narrow thinking, no longer can we remain petty. If we focus on being full of Christ in all his power and person and life we will gain Kingdom eyes by which we will see the bride of Christ in all her beauty, in all her colors, nationalities, tongues, and tribes.

Love Jesus.  Love the word of God. Love your neighbor as yourself. Embrace a heart and mind that sees beyond your garden into endless fields containing an endless variety of plants that sprang up from the same soil that contains your roots.
